About
Naked Between Armies
Guatemala. 1982. A civil war. Two armies. One stubborn American rancher caught between them—and something in the jungle that neither army understands.
Jack Warren came to Guatemala looking for adventure and a place to build a life. He found both in the remote Petén, where he runs cattle near the Mexican border and has learned to live with heat, disease, bad roads, armed checkpoints, and the occasional soldier or guerrilla demanding food.
Then one morning, Jack goes for a bath in the river—and finds four armed guerrillas waiting for him while he is completely naked.
It would be funny if they weren't pointing rifles at him.
Jack survives that encounter the same way he survives most things: with stubbornness, nerve, and a mouth that repeatedly gets him into trouble.
But staying neutral in a war is dangerous. The guerrillas suspect him of helping the army. The army suspects him of helping the guerrillas. Colonel Barrientos makes it clear that Jack's days may be numbered, while his friendship with the guerrilla leader Cesar draws him deeper into a conflict he never intended to join.
Then Jack and his foreman, Mateo, discover something in the jungle that has nothing to do with the war.
A dead ranch dog.
A clearing filled with animal bones arranged in a perfect spiral.
And a strange whistle that seems to come from exactly the wrong direction.
Mateo knows the old story of El Silbón—the Whistler, a presence said to haunt the deep jungle. Its warning is backward: when the whistle sounds close, you are safe. When it sounds far away, it is already close enough to touch you.
Jack doesn't believe in ghosts.
At least, he doesn't want to.
As disappearances multiply and even the hardened guerrillas begin to fear what is moving through the jungle, Jack is forced to confront a terrifying possibility: the war may not be the greatest danger surrounding his isolated finca.
And unlike soldiers and guerrillas, this enemy has no ideology, takes no orders, and recognizes no ceasefire.
For thirty-six years, Guatemala bleeds.
For thirty-six years, Jack survives.
But the jungle is patient.
The war ends in 1996.
The jungle never signed anything.
