The Sigsbee Deep is a Kirkus Recommended book. By the year 2049 the earth had has reached, “Hothouse” conditions. A catastrophic global event creates massive faults in the earth's crust severing Florida’s Pinellas Peninsula from the mainland. When the residents of Pinellas County realize what has happened, there is rioting and chaos. The peninsula, now an island, begins a slow slide down the continental shelf into the Gulf of Mexico while Florida submerges into the sea. Mays Jackson, a junkyard inventor, rushes to protect his children in the house above, “Jackson’s Salvage Yard,” the family business. Mays is now separated from Jessica, the love of his life and mother of his two children, as she had gone to Louisiana a few days. Three years later, ‘New Pinellas Island’ has adopted a routine of survival, except that now the Gulf is infested with giant killer Krakefish that can consume any vessel that attempts the journey to the US mainland. Mays, utilizing his creative inventiveness, has assisted the islanders with agriculture, water collection, and windmills — until USN retired captain, Martin Ullman informs Mays and his best friend that the island is sliding towards The Sigsbee Deep, a 17,000 foot-deep chasm in the Gulf floor, and Now they must escape before the Island tips into the Sigsbee Deep. Mays faces two problems. First, the Krakefish; no ordinary boat can traverse the Gulf and survive the killer species. Calling upon his resourcefulness, Mays invents a junkyard-built iron submarine that cannot be eaten by the Krake. Now, he must put himself, his children, and his friends into it and make the 250-mile journey across the Krake-infested Gulf to his wife in Louisiana, without alerting the Krule family of their intentions. Krule finds out and tries to steal the submarine for himself. But he is bested by Mays. Now, Mays rushes to take to the sea in the sub. Thus begins a chase and a battle at sea when Krule tries to find, and sink the armed submarine. A chase ensues ending in a fight between two ships in a storm-tossed sea. Later, Mays and his crew have a heart pounding undersea battle with a giant Krake that attacks the sub, despite the sub's defenses.
